The Best of Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit 2014 Pt-1

In the past I’ve regularly taken a large team to the annual Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit, this year was a little different. Thankfully the Global Leadership Summit is available digitally even after the live event! We previewed the talks and selected the best two from this years event to share with our team.

The first talk was from Joseph Grenny, Co-Founder, Vital Smarts: Social Scientist for Business Performance and New York Times bestselling author.

Key Question: Are there some moments in our leadership that are disproportionate in influence, that matter more than any others?

Crucial Conversations: these 3 things cause these moments to become more crucial than others

  1. High Stakes
  2. Opposing Opinions
  3. Strong Emotions

Principle #1  Any time you find yourself stuck in a relationship or team: There are always crucial conversations that we are not holding or not holding well

  • When it matters most you and I seem to do our worst

You have options when a crucial conversation comes

  1. Talk it out
  2. Act it out (if you don’t talk it out you will act it out…it will affect your behavior)
  • We buy into a lie early on and that is “We have to choose between telling the truth and keeping a friend.”
  • You can measure the health in a relationship or team by measuring how many undiscussables there are in the relationship or organization.
  • Progress in organizations begin when we as leaders discuss the undiscussables.
  • Our job as leaders is to model, teach, and measure these crucial conversations.
  • Crucial conversations are either a pit or a path – they can become an acceleration of intimacy – they become trust building accelerators
  • The Bible is a history of crucial conversations

7 Skills to Successfully Navigating Crucial Conversations:

  1. Start with the Heart
  2. Learn to Look
  3. Make it Safe
  4. Master my Stories
  5. STATE MY Path
  6. Explore Others’ Path
  7. Move to Action

In the first 30 seconds of a crucial conversations there are 2 things that determine if you will be heard:

  1. Mutual Purpose: Help them know that you care about their interest, concerns and interests
  2. Mutual Respect: Help them know that you genuinely care about them.

Candor is never the problem: people never get defensive about what you’re saying. People become defensive because of why they think you’re saying it.

1. What the Church can Learn from Southwest Airlines about Volunteers

I was recently on a Southwest Airlines flight and witnessed one of the most amazing volunteer moments I’ve ever seen. When it came time for the midflight snack of pretzels and peanuts a woman on the flight stepped up and volunteered to pass out the snack. And here’s the amazing thing…they let her! No application, no waiver, and no complex training classes. They simply handed over the basket of snacks and said go for it! Watching this whole thing go down I couldn’t help but think about how difficult we make it for people in the church to volunteer. Here are a couple of observations from that moment that I think are worth the church considering.

2. A Large Multisite Church in Phoenix is Looking for a Campus Pastor

I’m pleased to announce a new Staff Search. Sun Valley Community Church, is beginning a search for a Campus Pastor to serve on our Tempe Campus. Sun Valley began as a church plant in 1990 in Chandler, Arizona. Over the years Sun Valley has grown into a large mult-site church in the Phoenix metro area. Currently there are three campuses located in Gilbert, Tempe and Casa Grande with a total weekend attendance of over 5,500 people. Sun Valley was recently named by Outreach Magazine as one of the top 10 fastest growing churches in America. The Tempe Campus is the result of a merger in October of 2011 with Bethany Community Church. In the merger Sun Valley acquired a 16-acre, 8 building campus with over 100,000 sq. ft. under roof. Since the merger the campus has doubled in attendance and at present attendance is over 1,000. When fully utilized the campus capacity will accommodate 7,000 people. 3. A Leadership Conversation with Larry Osborne

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago in a post entitled “Making Small Groups the Hub of Your Ministry” that I recently had the opportunity to spend some time at NorthCoast Church with Larry Osborne and his team to talk about Leadership and Small Groups. If you don’t know already, NorthCoast is an outlier when it comes to small groups and you need to get to know these guys. While the norm across the nation is hovering at about 50% of weekend worship attendance in groups, NorthCoast is shattering that norm and boasts just over 90% of their weekend worship attendance in groups. That was enough for us to get on a plane and spend some time learning from these guys. While that original post focused on Small Groups these are some of my take aways from the conversation that had broader implications for pastors and leaders.

Willow Creek Community Church Founder and Senior Pastor Bill Hybels opened the Summit addressing the courage that leadership requires.

2. Colin Powell

One of the United States greatest leaders in recent history, General Colin Powell, gave a talk based on his recent book “It Worked for Me, in Life and Leadership.”

3. Patrick Lencioni

Patrick Lencioni, is the founder and president of The Table Group and author of 10 best selling books. He gave an incredible talk about “The 3 Signs of a Miserable Job”!

4. Liz Wiseman

Liz Wiseman is the President of the Wiseman Group, a Silicon Valley leadership development firm. She is a former executive at Oracle Corporation, a Fortune 100 company. She is also a Wall Street Journal Best-selling Author. She gave a talk based on her book Multipliers.

5. Chris Brown

Chris Brown serves as one of four Lead Pastors at North Coast Community Church in Southern California. Without question this was one of the best and most challenging talks for Church Leaders this year!

6. Bob Goff

Founder and CEO of Restore International, Attorney, and Author of the incredible book Love Does. In his unique style Bob talked about how love takes action.

7. Mark Burnett

It was incredible to sit and listen to Bill Hybles have a conversation with Mark Burnett, four-time Emmy Award Winner and Executive Producer of Survivor, The Voice and The Bible among other shows.

8. Joseph Grenny

Joseph Grenny is the Co-Founder of VitalSmarts and best-selling author. He spoke on mastering the skill of influence, the topic of his book: Influencer: The New Science of Leading Change.

9.Vijay Govindarajan

Vijay Govindarajan was interviewed by Jim Mellado about getting innovation right. Vijay is ranked #3 on Thinkers 50 and was named one of the Top 10 Business School Professors in the world by Business Week.

10. Dr. Brene Brown

Dr. Brene Brown, Research Professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work did an incredible job speaking about the vulnerability of a leader. Dr. Brown is a groundbreaking researcher into the topics of shame, worthiness, and courage. Check out her book Daring Greatly.

11.Oscar Muriu

Oscar Muriu who serves as the Senior Pastor at Nairobi Chapel in Kenya gave an inspiring talk about multiplying your impact exponentially. Under Oscar’s leadership Nairobi Chapel has grown from a 40 person local church to a network of 30 churches with more than 14,000 in weekly attendance!

12. Dr. Henry Cloud

Leadership expert, clinical psychologist, and best selling author Dr. Henry Cloud spoke on “Reversing the Death Spiral of a Leader.”

13. Andy Stanley

The closing session of the 2013 Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit was entrusted to Andy Stanley of North Point Ministries, and he delivered!

Global Leadership Summit 2013: Andy Stanley

I hope the notes I’ve been posting this week have been helpful! The closing session of the 2013 Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit was entrusted to Andy Stanley of North Point Ministries, and he delivered! If you haven’t ordered it already, I’d encourage you to get your hands on a copy of his newest book Deep & Wide.

  • Jesus didn’t predict a place (upon this rock I will build my church), he predicted a people…a movement.
  • Jesus has built a movement on the back of an extraordinary statement that “He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”
  • How could this have possibly worked?
  • Because Jesus made a promise and He has been at the epicenter of the local church for more than 2,000 years and Jesus has been, and will continue to build the local church and no body’s death is going to stop it…not even His own.
  • The reason it’s important to ask “How this thing got started?” is because in a majority of the world even in churches all across America it needs to start over.
  • The message was “You killed Him, God brought Him back to life…now say you’re sorry.”
  • The central teaching of the church was not we believe something is true. It was we believe something has happened. All religions think they have the truth. The first century church believed something had happened.
  • The movement stopped moving…the gathering stopped growing…when they got just beyond the reach of the persecution…it stopped.
  • Then God went and got a new kind of leader…Saul of Tarsus…who became the Apostle Paul.
  • Whether you believe or not, whether you corporate or not…Jesus is going to build His church.
  • James, the brother of Jesus, may be our greatest argument for the deity of Jesus. Because what would your brother have to do to convince you that He is the Savior of the world?
  • If a guy can predict his death and his resurrection I am with him.
  • You may do more profitable things with your life but you’ll never do anything more meaningful with your life than build the local church because it is the work that Jesus has been doing for 2,000 years.

Global Leadership Summit 2013: Dr. Henry Cloud

Leadership expert, clinical psychologist, and best selling author Dr. Henry Cloud spoke on “Reversing the Death Spiral of a Leader.” Check out his newest book Boundaries for Leaders.

  • Leaders take ownership, face the brutal facts, and deal with big problems.
  • The most difficult thing for a leader to be in charge of is himself/herself.
  • Some leaders get results and some don’t. Leaders who get results will eventually hit a point where they begin to spiral down…what happens next matters.
  • Leaders who get through spirals think, behave and feel differently than those who spiral out.
  • If you’ve got a choice between those who can and don’t think they can, and those who can’t and think they can…those who think they can will win every time.
  • The #1 factor of getting between here and there is believing that it can happen.
  • All leaders believe it can happen when they begin. But eventually circumstance arise and they realize that they’re out of control of their circumstances.
  • Learned helplessness: you were designed by God to be in a cause & effect universe A+B=C. When you are out of control of things that begin to affect you something happens…
  • The 3 P’s:
    • Personal: Why didn’t that work? I’m no good. I can’t do it. Every leader does stuff that doesn’t work in moving from here to there. The ones that don’t spiral don’t take it personal. When leaders take it personal and can’t have control of results, they spiral out of control.
    • Pervasive: it’s not just that one person, it’s everyone. My whole life sucks. Everything becomes bad.
    • Permanent: It’ll always be this way, it’s never going to change,
  • There’s a way out.
  • Science and the Bible always agree in a place called reality. If they’re not agreeing you’ve got wacky science or goofy Christians and there’s no shortage of either.
  • Reversing the 3 P’s:
    • #1 Log and dispute your negative thoughts
    • #2 Take back control by dealing with reality and make a list of what you can control and what you can’t control. Everyone has control of something.
      • Your life is a movie it’s not a scene and every great movie has crisis scenes in it
    • #3 You must connect
      • Your brain needs fuel: oxygen, glucose, & relationship
  • The answer to feeling bad is not feeling good it’s love
  • In the beginning we sinned, and felt bad and covered up, and started trying to do good, but it doesn’t make us feel better, love does
  • Find a way!
