The best Coaches not only put their teams in the best position to win, but they help their players become better people, they improve their game, and they help them grow. It’s true not only in sports, but off the field as well. The real irony is the higher you go in leadership the more coaching comes into play. Below are 4 phases of the game that your players need you to coach them through if they’re going to grow.
1. Goal
What are you trying to accomplish? What are the big rocks that you’re attempting to move right now? Coaches help us identify the right goals to set and put our energy into at the right stage of the game.
2. Reality
If you want to get there (wherever there is), you have to have a clear sense of where you are right now in order to chart a clear pathway forward to your “preferred there.” Great coaches help us see reality (even when we don’t want to face it).
3. Options
What options are available to you right now? Because they see everything from a different perspective (they’re not in the game remember), coaches help us see options that we would never see ourselves. The field takes on a whole other perspective from the sideline or the coach’s box.
4. What
What are you going to do before we meet next time? Coaches help hold us accountable to real definable action within a measurable amount of time. And it’s incredible how small incremental adjustments implemented over an extended period of time can result in tremendous change!

Coaching is one of my favorite ways to interact with my faculty as well as my students. It’s such a win-win engagement, getting past the specifics of an objective of “what” and “how” and getting to the “why” factor in what they are trying to achieve. Thank you Paul for a great review of coaching!
