Do Denominational Labels Matter Anymore?

Recently I was criticized by a former student that Thomas Road Baptist Church is not “Baptist” enough. I’ve heard that from time to time. Used to happen at West Ridge Church when new folks would come in and say, “love this place, but it’d better be Baptist or we’re gone!”

My word. John the Baptist didn’t die for my sins, Jesus did. Having been in a Baptist church most of my life, I have an appreciation for the times in history when true followers of Jesus in response to false teachings or persecutions did distinguish themselves with the name Baptists. I do appreciate the long history of disciples who called themselves Baptists who gave all and died on foreign shores to proclaim Good News. People claimed the name Baptist as a way to say they were followers of the Way in religiously confusing times. I honor those martyrs and that history. It’s disrespectful to ignore it.

But Baptist only? Baptist above all? The Baptist life? What about the Christ life? What about Christian? What about disciple of Jesus above all?

I humbly perceive that 90% of people who argue about being Baptist over another name are referring to worship styles, denominational practices, and secondary or tertiary teaching distinctions. They don’t understand primary biblical doctrine that unites most of us. By the way, stick another name in here: Methodist, Presbyterian, Pentacostal, Calvary Chapel, Lutheran- we’re all guilty.

Yes, Dr. Falwell once held an event called Baptist Fundamentalism, which gave us all a free trip to skip conference sessions and explore Washington DC. But he was a Christian first and foremost – “Jesus First”. He was a fundamentalist evangelical, holding to core teachings and heart of the mission with any brother of another name who would join.

Time is coming very rapidly in America, where names, tribes, associations, denominations will mean very, very little to anyone outside the faith. The only questions they will ask are these: “Are you followers of that Jesus? Do you believe those teachings of that Book? Do you really love each other the way He said you would? Is there any salvation there for me?”

God help us if the answer is, “not sure ‘bout all of that, but we’re Baptist!”

Guatemala Day 1

It started at 6:00am EST in Atlanta and ended at 7:00pm EST Panajachel, Guatemala and in between was one great big adventure!

The girls were so ridiculously cute with their backpacks and blankets going through security in ATL. For them it was all new, so even the long lines and walking through security with no shoes on became fun! Thankfully, neither of them had to be patted down by TSA…that might have set things off in the wrong direction. You should have seen the girls faces as the plane took off! It was worth a million dollars! I love how excited they get over simple things. Thankfully all of our luggage arrived with us, and we were off through customs without hiccup. The Radford’s met us at the airport and down the road we went. Stopping along the way at McDonald’s (the service is WAY better in Guatemala), and later to cover the luggage with a tarp (it was tied down to the roof). Along the way we ran into some flash flooding…some of the streets looked like small rivers, and let’s just say some people are going to have a hard time starting their cars in the morning. The girls made a game of counting stray dogs along the road. I made a game of counting guys urinating on the side of the road. We stopped to grab a Coke and saw some cute rabbits in cages, only to discover they weren’t pets, but were on the menu at the local restaurant. As we got into the mountains we started literally driving through the clouds…visibility was down to 20-40 feet! My buddy Lee (missionary here in Guatemala) said it was the worst he had ever seen it! Sadly we even saw a fatal accident along the way. Then as we came down the mountain into Panajachel the girls saw their first waterfall and then their first volcano. All said, it was one great big adventure getting here…can’t wait to see what the week holds!

As internet access allows, I’ll do my best to keep you updated this week about what’s going on with our family mission trip to Guatemala!

Why I Love Working at Sun Valley Community Church

Every year at Sun Valley Community Church we share wins from the previous year of ministry and I thought I’d share them with you. I hope this is encouraging to you, inspires you, and prompts you to pray for the ministry of Sun Valley.

I know that ministry isn’t all about the numbers, it’s about life change. That’s why I’m excited about these numbers, because they represent lives that are being changed.  These numbers below represent stories of people who Sun Valley has helped meet, know and follow Jesus.

  • 902 people said yes to following Jesus
  • 763 people were baptized
  • 334 households took the “90 Day Challenge” and started tithing for the first time
  • 2,588 people grew in their relationship with Jesus by being in a Small Group
  • 2,532 people made a difference with their life by serving on a Volunteer Team
  • 1,581 kids and students were impacted through camps
  • 409 people went on a short-term mission trip
  • Over 1.5 Million Dollars went outside the 4-walls of Sun Valley Community Church to help people all over the world meet, know and follow Jesus
  • We opened a campus in Queen Creek and it has averaged 1,256 in weekend attendance during their first year. That campus also just broke 3,000 on Christmas Eve
  • We grand opened our permanent location in Casa Grande (they were set up and tear down…the campus is pretty stoked about it…so am I) and have grown and averaged 479 in weekend attendance since the move
  • Sun Valley was recognized as the 28th fastest growing church in the country and 65th largest church in the country

You’re allowed to celebrate right along with us. The Kingdom of God is taking ground through the ministry of Sun Valley! If I didn’t work at Sun Valley, I would go to Sun Valley. I’m really honored to be a part of what Jesus is doing at Sun Valley, it’s legitimately the most fun I’ve every had in ministry! This year I celebrate 7 years on Staff this year and I’m looking forward to many more to come!

So pray big prayers and take big risks, because we have a big God, and He still does big things! I’d encourage you, if the Lord brings us to your mind, pray for us as we continue to help the thousands who don’t yet know Jesus meet, know, and follow Him.

Why I Love Working at Sun Valley Community Church

When I was a freshman in High School I prayed a prayer, begging God to let me to be a part of helping thousands of people meet Him. It’s crazy to think that all of these years later God is answering those prayers.

Every year at Sun Valley Community Church we share wins from the previous year of ministry and I thought I’d share them with you. I hope this is encouraging to you, inspires you, and prompts you to pray for the ministry of Sun Valley.

Ministry isn’t all about the numbers, it’s about life change. That’s why I’m excited about these numbers, because they represent lives that are being changed.  These numbers below represent stories of people who Sun Valley has helped meet, know and follow Jesus.

  • 1,034 people said yes to following Jesus
  • 799 people were baptized
  • 506 people strengthened their marriage through our marriage ministry
  • More than 3,800 people attended a Sun Valley Campus for the first time
  • More than 2,000 people are a part of a volunteer team
  • More than 3,300 people are a part of a small group where they’re building great friendships centered around Gods’ Word

You’re allowed to celebrate right along with us. The Kingdom of God is taking ground through the ministry of Sun Valley! It’s humbling and exciting to see prayers I prayed years ago as a freshman in High School answered all of these years later.
