Top 5 Posts from December

December was a busy month on Helping Churches Make Vision Real! There was a lot of engagement on social media on these posts. So thank you for making these the Top 5 Posts from December of 2012 on Helping Churches Make Vision Real! If you missed out on any of them, here they are all in one nice tidy little spot!

#1 How much should we Pay our Pastor?

This post became very popular, very quickly. It’s a question I get frequently there are a lot of people are wrestling with the question. This post will give you some good resources to answer that question.

#2 Why Telling People What to do makes them Stupid

The title of the post says it all. While telling people what to do may get your goals and tasks accomplished it will deflate your team and undermine any leadership culture you’re trying to build.

#3 Ministry Trends for 2013

This intriguing info-graphic got a lot of traffic as people are wrestling with what the significant issues affecting ministry and the local church are going to be in 2013.

#4 I’m Starting a New Coaching Network

I love helping churches make vision real. That’s why I’m offering another Leadership Coaching Network for church leaders beginning in March of 2013. I love seeing leaders and churches take steps to get unstuck and move towards accomplishing God’s plan for their church! There are still a few spots left in this network if you’re interested!

#5 Out of the Box

At Sun Valley we discovered that there are 82,000 families in Maricopa County who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. So this Christmas we decided to do something about it. We went after a social justice campaign of filling 5,000 boxes with food to care for local families. This post tells all about it.

Leadership Coaching Network Starting Soon!

A couple of weeks ago, we opened applications for the new leadership coaching networks that will begin in March through TonyMorganLive. The deadline for applications is January 31, but applications have already been coming in and these new coaching networks will probably fill up before then.

Still on the fence about whether or not to participate? Here’s what others have said:

Paul Alexander is a natural leader and a great coach. He’s strategic, constantly learning, and has been very helpful to me in my ministry leadership and management.”
– Mike Work, Executive Pastor of Mission Community Church in Gilbert, AZ

“When I have a leadership question Paul is always one of my first calls. He is a gifted leader and strategist. Paul knows how to ask the right questions to properly diagnosis current systems, and the unique capacity to help teams formulate a plan that is both practical and attainable. Working with Paul has been an encouragement and has stirred in me the desire to be a better leader.”
– Aaron McRae, Senior Pastor of Hillside Community Church in Alta Loma, CA

“Paul Alexander is simply brilliant when it comes to helping pastors and churches get laser-focused on their purpose, process and values. I believe he is one of the top strategic thinkers in the church today. After connecting with him, you will be encouraged, inspired and equipped.”
– Kyle Wall, Senior Pastor of Atlantic Shores Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, VA

“Paul is a very talented leader who knows how to form and implement strategic plans, while encouraging and building leaders in the process. He is methodical in planning his approach, and builds his processes to include appropriate goals, steps, budgets, and measurement for completion. During my time working with Paul, he demonstrated how to focus on projects and refocus when scope changed or obstacles rose up. While learning from Paul, he made things “reproducible” which has allowed me to keep my teams on task and lead them to do the same.”
– Kerry Dodd, CFO of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, WA

I’m Starting a New Coaching Network

While my current Coaching Network is full, I’m excited to let you know that I’m beginning a new West Coast Coaching Network in partnership with TonyMorganLive beginning in March of 2013!

This is an incredible opportunity to not only advance your leadership, but also connect with like minded leaders and build lasting friendships. You’ll participate in six days of coaching sessions spread out over six months. You will receive focused training on a variety of strategic ministry topics including staffing, leadership development, communications, financial stewardship, volunteer team development, weekend services, ministry structure, discipleship, multisite and more. There will be tools, exercises and best practices to implement after every session. You’ll receive several free resources and get access to incredible guest presenters. Many have already expressed interest, so I’d encourage you to get your application in quick.

If you’re considering joining us here are some things to keep in mind…

This is not an opportunity for someone who is looking for inspiration: This coaching network involves work. You can’t just show up. You will have to commit to six months of reading and engaging exercises with the ministry team at your church.

This experience isn’t for people looking for leadership theory: Yes, you’ll learn some leadership skills, but this experience is designed for you to put those skills into action. Every month you will leave with new tools to implement in your ministry environment.

This is not a conference experience: In a conference, you can sit and soak in the teaching without engaging anyone else. In this coaching experience, you will be encouraged and challenged by other leaders who will be counting on you to participate fully.

5 reasons why you should participate in a leadership coaching network

There are all kinds of reasons why you should participate in a leadership coaching network, but here the five that standout to me!

1. Structured Learning Pathway

Learning and growth just don’t happen. It’s an intentional process. Participating in a coaching group will push you to systematically work through leadership concepts, organizational systems, reading assignments, and leadership exercises that are intentionally structured to help you grow.

2. Fresh Eyes

Every time you bring a new staff person into your church or organization you’ve got a widow of opportunity for learning. They are seeing everything for the first time and with fresh eyes. They haven’t acclimated to the new culture that they’re swimming in, and as a result they view everything from a different perspective, which provides a great opportunity for learning…if you take advantage of the moment. Participating in a coaching group allows people with fresh eyes to take a look into your life and leadership and offer a fresh and different perspective.

3. Our Best Growth doesn’t happen Alone

I’m intentional about building an annual reading plan and I love the inspiration that comes from national leadership conferences. But nothing beats wrestling ideas to the ground, digging through best practices and what it takes to make concepts become reality with a group of peers. Participating in a coaching group allows your ideas, thoughts, and concepts to be challenged.

4. The Discipline of Submission

Great leaders make great followers because they properly understand and have a healthy view of authority and submission. While most of you are used to leading at a high level, participating in a coaching group is a way for you to intentionally place yourself under the leadership of others.

5. You’re not done yet

It may be a bit cliché, but it’s true, leaders are learners. Unfortunately I’ve discovered along the way that many leaders also have a “more than healthy ego.” It kind of comes with the territory. Participating in a coaching group is an intentional way to remind yourself that you still have a lot to learn, and that we can learn something from everyone.
