In God We Trust

At Sun Valley Community Church we’re getting ready to begin a brand new teaching series in November called “In God We Trust.” The reality is we put our trust in all kinds of things. Many of us think education will fix our problems, others strive after financial security, some chase after the perfect relationship, while others even believe electing the right President will solve our problems. We’re all putting our trust in something. What are you trusting in? Hope to see you at one of our three Sun Valley Campuses (Casa Grande, Gilbert, or Tempe) as we begin this conversation the weekend of November 3-4. Check out this brand new video and feel free to share it with your friends!

global leadership summit 2012: geoffrey canada

Geoffrey Canada is a social activist and educator. Since 1990, Canada has been president and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone in Harlem, New York

  • We usually think in terms of, “What is the shortest amount of time and the least amount of money we can invest to make a permanent change?”
  • There is no time in a child’s life that you can’t be a great parent
  • You can’t take a vacation from parenting
  • It’s not exceptional to meet people’s needs it’s exceptional that people don’t think they can or should do it
  • One of the most difficult things you can do is fail and fail publicly
  • Sometimes not taking the money from a donor is the smartest thing you can do, particularly when the gift is given with the hope of it being given to something that will take you off mission
  • The day I walked into my job there was a succession plan
  • There is no plan for the company to go worse upon my departure than when I am here.
  • If you love your organization then you have to leave when it is going up so that way when the next person comes in they don’t come in at a bad time getting wrongly compared to you.
  • It’s easy to have faith when everything is going great; the real test of faith is when you’re faced with something that your faith in God is the only thing that will keep you going

chic-fil-a leadercast dr. roland fryer

Below are my take aways from Dr. Roland Fyer who serves as Professor of Economics at Harvard University also the founder and CEO of The Education Innovation Laboratory at Harvard.

Changing the culture of schools & Education

  1. Lengthen the School Day
  2. Hire and Keep Great Teachers
  3. Develop a Culture of High Expectations
  4. Tutor Groups
  5. Quick Assessment & Adjustment

I loved how easily transferable the above 5 principles were to improving or changing the culture of a church as well.

Applied to Church-world…

  1. To Improve Performance it takes Practice
  2. Hire and keep Great Pastors/Staff
  3. Expect Great Results
  4. Specifically Coach & Develop Talent
  5. Evaluate Performance and Adjust your Approach

Creating and Leveraging learning opportunities Part-2

As I round out this list that I began the other day and reflect on it, I find myself thinking, “It just doesn’t seem that difficult to me.” After all these are things that any leader can do, right? But why do so few actually seem to employ such simple tactics? There’s probably a grocery list of reasons, including the excuse of simply being too busy. But at the foundation of it I believe lays an addiction to progress that is rooted in basic insecurities that are found in many leaders (and “regular” people too by the way). Often times as leaders we are so wound up in advancing the mission of the organization we’re leading, that we forget the most important resource we have is our people. And the most important step you can take in advancing the mission of your organization is developing the people on your team.
