Thank you for making November one of the highest trafficked months of the year here at Helping Churches Make Vision Real! It’s great staying connected with you through social media and hearing about how helpful different articles have been. So, thank you for connecting with me through the content on this blog! You made these the top 5 Posts from this last month. If you missed out on any of them, here they are all in one place for your convenience!

#1 6 Things I Bet You Don’t Know about your Pastors’ Wife

One of the least thought about people in the church today is a Pastor’s wife. While leaders get all the attention and accolades their families and private lives are thought of very little by the public. In fact in a moment in church history where we are inundated with volumes of leadership ideas and training very little is written about pastor’s wives. I recently sat down with Lisa, my wife, and asked her about her experience being married to a full-time pastor for the past 18+ years. Here is some of what she had to say…

#2 A Leadership Conversation with an Executive Pastor at a Church of 20,000+

One of the most incredible and successful churches in America is one you’ve probably never heard of. Like many churches Christ’s Church of the Valley started in the living room of the founding pastor, in this case Don Wilson. Now over 30 years later CCV has a weekly attendance of more than 20,000 people located across 6 campuses. Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Ashley Wooldridge who serves as the Executive Pastor at CCV and talk leadership and multisite. Here are a few of the highlights from the conversation.

#3 Replenish: Leading from a Health Soul

Lance Witt served 20 years as a senior pastor and five years as the executive pastor at Saddleback Church with Rick Warren. A couple of years ago Lance released his book Replenish: Leading from a Healthy Soul. It’s a great book for church leaders. It’s so good, in fact, that we have our Leadership Coaching Networks at the Unstuck Group read it for the conversation we have about personal health. If you’re in ministry, I strongly encourage you to order this book today, you won’t regret it. Here are a couple of key ideas that stood out to me.

#4 What Makes a Great Campus Pastor a Great Campus Pastor?

Leading in a multisite setting I’m often asked by other church leaders, “What makes a great Campus Pastor a great Campus Pastor?” Often times when a church is thinking about moving to a multisite model the last thing they’re thinking about is who is going to be their next Campus Pastor. They’re stuck on logistics and most just assume they’ll stick an existing up and coming staff member on the next campus and hope for the best. That’s great IF you have the right person on the team already, but this can also be a fatal flaw. Trust me, I know and I’ve lived it. So here are 7 things I’m looking for when I’m looking for a Campus Pastor.

#5 The Best of Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit Pt-1

In the past I’ve regularly taken a large team to the annual Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit, this year was a little different. Thankfully the Global Leadership Summit is available digitally even after the live event! We previewed the talks and selected the best two from this years event to share with our team. The first talk was from Joseph Grenny, Co-Founder, Vital Smarts: Social Scientist for Business Performance and New York Times bestselling author.

Global Leadership Summit 2013: General Colin Powell

If you missed this year’s Willow Creek Association Global Leadership Summit, no worries! I started posting all of my notes from each session earlier this morning and will continue all week. So check back often to get all of the great content you missed from some incredible leaders and communicators. Like this session from General Colin Powell. You can also pick up his new book “It Worked for Me, in Life and Leadership.”

  • Leadership = Getting more out of people than the science of management says you can.
  • Leaders inspire people to reach beyond themselves.
  • Leaders aren’t the people getting the work done. It’s followers getting the real work done. Leadership efforts need to be focused on the followers to help them get the right things done.
  • Giving them a sense of purpose (what are we doing this work for?).
  • Trust is connected to empowerment. You can’t empower people if you can’t trust them. If you can trust them you can risk. Give them a zone of operation…it gives them a sense of power and purposefulness. It also means the leader needs to act in a trustworthy manner.
  • Trust it the glue and holds an organization together and the lubricant that keeps it moving forward.
  • Great leaders constantly refresh and repeat simple themes.
  • If you want to be a great leader, take care of your troops.
    • Give them a sense of purpose
    • Remember that execution is the most important part of leadership
    • Failure is an option every time
  • Soldiers are not looking for sympathy, they don’t want people to say they’re sorry, they want to tell their story and know their service matter, they want to be recognized.
  • Great leader always collide with great timing (“luck” favors the prepared).
  • It’ll look different in the morning: it may not, a day may go bad, but it’s an attitude, it’s an aspiration, it’s going to be better because we’re going to make it better.
  • Perpetual optimism is force multiplier: how can I make my force more effective? Supplies, numbers, etc. No matter how bad things are we’re going to fix it. When you do have a good day don’t get too wound up about it. When you have a bad day, don’t get too down about it. People look to leaders to solve problems. People don’t respond to orders.
  • Get mad, but then get over it: mad is a bad attitude. Everyone get’s mad. When you act when you’re mad you’re not at your best. If you stay mad the whole organization is contaminated. People won’t come to you as the leader etc.
  • How do you know when to fire somebody and when to give them a second chance? When you can’t get a subordinate to work on your purposes it’s time for them to go. The first ones to know about it is the “others” they know it before everyone else. And they’re waiting for the leader to do something about it. Leaders solve problems. And if you don’t solve this kind of problem you lose the trust of your subordinates. And people will stop bringing you problems…when they stop bringing you problems they think you can’t solve them or that you don’t care (that’s even worse).
  • See an aspiring leader – what’s a red flag? Ego
  • Tell someone they’re not cut out to be a leader: promote people on their potential not their performance…you have to have an instinct of their potential. Past performance is an indicator not a guarantee.
  • Tell me Early: problem solving is what leaders do…but tell me about the problem early. Don’t try to work on it before you tell me about it…tell me early…no surprises. But you’ve got to create the environment where people will come in and tell you.
  • You have to challenge people or they’ll just sit there and watch you.
  • Don’t expect your boss to solve your problems. They have their own problems to solve.

  • Giving people words and phrases to express your values & culture is about 50% of building that culture
  • …it could happen, and our world is screwed up enough that it needs to happen…
  • Everyone wins, when a leader gets better
  • Matt. 16:18 I will build my church & the gates of hell will not stand against it
  • Who is building the church, He is, and He will not allow it to be easily defeated
  • Have you ever been to a church that was so weak and sick that you wanted to protect people from coming to it so they wouldn’t get an incorrect view of what God was like?
  • It’s one thing to see a vision it’s another to be seized by one
  • A vision is a picture of the future that produces passion in people
  • Will the local church, the hope of the world, be able to sustain itself until the end of time?
  • The church will outlive and outlast every other dynasty and empire because of who is building and sustaining it
  • This is the only thing that Jesus is doing between now and the end of time
  • The core of leadership is trust
  • By the level of trust we have, we can lead people from here to there. When we lose trust it can all come to a grinding halt.
