big news in the alexander house

I am thrilled to be able to announce that Lisa and I are getting ready to welcome our fourth child into the Alexander family. We are pregnant! I’ve always thought it was funny that guys say, “We are pregnant!” This will be number four for us, one more and we can field our own basketball team! That’s not the goal by the way. The girls are ready to practice all of their “mommy skills” and Lincoln is hoping for a baby brother to train up in the ways of the force. Lisa and I are just thrilled that the Lord would trust us of all people with another child! We’d appreciate all of your prayers as we begin this new part the journey as a family.

a large multisite church in phoenix is hiring a jr. high pastor

I’m pleased to announce a new Staff Search. Sun Valley Community Church, the church I have the honor of serving at, is beginning a national search for a Jr. High Pastor to serve on our Tempe Campus. Sun Valley began as a church plant in 1990 in Chandler, Arizona. Over the years Sun Valley has grown into a large mult-site church in the Phoenix area. Currently there are three campuses located in Gilbert, Tempe and Casa Grande with a total weekend attendance of 5,000 people. The Tempe campus was the result of a merger in October 2011 with Bethany Community Church. In the merger, Sun Valley acquired a 16-acre, 8-building campus with over 100,000 sq. ft. under roof. At present, the campus attendance is about 1,000, but when fully utilized, the campus capacity will accommodate about 7,000 people. Sun Valley was recently featured in a new book by Leadership Network about church mergers: Better Together: Making Church Mergers Work. To learn more about that story click here Part-1 and Part-2.

  • Giving people words and phrases to express your values & culture is about 50% of building that culture
  • …it could happen, and our world is screwed up enough that it needs to happen…
  • Everyone wins, when a leader gets better
  • Matt. 16:18 I will build my church & the gates of hell will not stand against it
  • Who is building the church, He is, and He will not allow it to be easily defeated
  • Have you ever been to a church that was so weak and sick that you wanted to protect people from coming to it so they wouldn’t get an incorrect view of what God was like?
  • It’s one thing to see a vision it’s another to be seized by one
  • A vision is a picture of the future that produces passion in people
  • Will the local church, the hope of the world, be able to sustain itself until the end of time?
  • The church will outlive and outlast every other dynasty and empire because of who is building and sustaining it
  • This is the only thing that Jesus is doing between now and the end of time
  • The core of leadership is trust
  • By the level of trust we have, we can lead people from here to there. When we lose trust it can all come to a grinding halt.

global leadership summit 2012: john ortberg

John Ortberg is the Lead Pastor at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, in Menlo Park, CA and author of “many books” according to Wikipedia (that means too many to count). These are my notes from his talk:

  •  Too often we argue about Christianity instead of marveling at Jesus
  • Christian Leaders need to expand their view of Jesus because they are stewards of the movement that He began
  • Jesus gave the world its most important movement
  • Jesus Christ has become the hinge of history
  • We give our children names like Paul, Peter, and Mary and our dogs’ names like Caesar and Nero
  • Jesus shaped how we express compassion
  • Wherever you have an institution of self-giving for the lowly…it probably has its roots in Christianity
  • The Jesus movement shaped education
  • The Jesus movement revolutionized art
  • Jesus changed how we think about human rights and dignity
  • Who is this man?
